Bronze, something humans beings have been using for thousands of years is a beautiful and useful metal for a variety of applications!
What I’ve done with my patented Gem Bronze alloy is create a stable material with a macroscopic grain structure, big enough to see with the naked eye while still maintaining stability and strength for stock removal and casting projects using this alloy. This macroscopic grain/crystal structure is what gives Gem Bronze its unique crystallized appearance.
To reveal the beautiful grain structure of the crystals within the metal, an etching process is required. In the blog section of the website there is a step by step guide on how to best accomplish this along with a video showing the process located on my Instagram account.
I etched a quarter of the ingot in the video to highlight the difference that etching produces on Gem Bronze.
Gem Bronze is special because the large grains are grown from a unique chemical composition as opposed to a physical heat treating technique. This means that if this alloy is melted down and recast, it will grow the same large crystals back once it solidifies. Something other crystallized metals are incapable of doing without reverting to their base state after cooling.
With advancement in metal purity since the Bronze Age this bronze here contains next to no impurities. More importantly, it contains no lead. No lead is ever used at Mike’s Metalworking to prevent accidental contamination.
