Nickel silver straight from the factory has a couple of issues. The first being its high melting point of on average over 2000F, a tad bit hotter than the melting point of pure copper.
The amount of nickel in this family of alloys increases both corrosion and wear resistance quite significantly. The corrosion resistance is beneficial but the wear resistance translates to a more difficult time with sanding and machining as well as polishing.
I solved both of these issues by adding bismuth and phosphorus into nickel silver to make the free machining version of the alloy I’m selling.
Bismuth reduces wear resistance and increases machining capabilities along with the quality of the final polish without needing to add lead.
Phosphorus reduces the melting point of the alloy and helps improve the fluidity of the metal. It also decreases thermal conductivity meaning it takes longer for the metal to get hot from friction, making it harder to burn your hands while using this material on a sander!
